Cheng Ran 程然

Cheng Ran’s artworks are mostly videos and films. He is applying basic cinematic techniques like simple cutting, rearranging, montage, full length shot and so on. Usually, his videos do not have complete and coherent storylines. Sentiment is the main part to show. 2018 BMCA realised his solo exhibition „Diary of a Madman“ at The Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) in Tel Aviv.

He is one of the most promising Chinese artists of his generation. Literature, western culture and European art house movies are Cheng Ran’s main sources of inspiration. These influences refer to the many bootlegs and illegal versions of films, books and other manifestations of western pop culture in China. This post-modern way of dealing with meaning, copyright and authenticity is the starting point for Cheng Ran’s practice, which consists mainly of video and film, as well as some photography and installations. With the help from classical music, he dives into the gaps within existing plots, creating speculative stories and connections that present a new reality. Cheng looks beyond the exuberance of radical and social change in contemporary China. By combining cinema, theatre and poetry in a loose and highly stylized manner, he brings to the stories endless possibility of meaning.

Cheng Ran, born in 1981 in Inner Mongolia, China. He graduated from China Academy of Art in Hangzhou in ?– He studied in Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in 2013. He lives and works in Hangzhou curettenely.
